At the conclusion of this training course candidates will have updated their operational skills to safely excavate graves within a cemetery environment.

Grave digging Mechanical Excavation Refresher Syllabus

  • Introduction to general machine and excavation safety
  • Overview of associated legislation, regulation and guidance
  • Management of spoil – angles of repose – battering, stepping and forming
  • Machine pre-use checks and basic machine maintenance i.e. greasing
  • Protection of Turf and Memorials
  • Marking out of the grave area
  • Setting and stabilising the excavator prior to excavation
  • Working with ground support systems
  • Bucket changing procedures
  • Methods for accurate excavation of single, double and triple graves
  • Loading of dumpers or small tipping vehicles
  • Backfilling and topsoil finishing
  • Post operation washdown and maintenance
