Course Overview
This practical training course is suitable for personnel with little or no operating experience of Sand Skimmers
At the conclusion of this training course, learners will have acquired the underpinning knowledge and operational skills required to safely and effectively operate the Sand Skimmer on slow sand filters.

Sand Skimmer Qualification Syllabus
- Introduction to the Sand Skimmer
- Hazards and risks associated to Sand Skimmer operations
- Operators duties and responsibilities when cleaning filter beds
- Function and operation of the Sand Skimmer
- Overview of the transmission system, deck control panel and joysticks
- Information sources i.e. manufactures instructions
- Awareness of the emergency escape procedures for the operator’s compartment
- Safe access and egress form operators compartment
- Operator safety devices i.e. ROP’s, FOP’s & Seat Belt
- Pre-use checks, daily maintenance and defect reporting
- Function of the Skimming deck, weed rake and deck sensors
- Travelling and manoeuvring the Sand Skimmer
- Procedures for accessing the filter bed – Ramp negotiation
- Marking out the filter bed
- Sand skimming procedures and machine setup
- Function and operational considerations for the sand conveyor
- Dumper positioning and loading procedures
- Washdown, parking and post operation maintenance
