Course Overview
This practical training course is intended for novice overhead crane operators who will be required to sling, lift and move suspended loads using industrial overhead cranes.
On completion of this initial training course, operators will have acquired the fundamental knowledge and associated skills, for the safe slinging of loads and operation of overhead travelling cranes.

- Introduction to overhead crane operations
- Roles and responsibilities of personnel associated with lifting operations
- General workplace safety during lifting operations.
- Understanding load weight estimation, sling angles, safe working loads and working load limits
- Manufactures information and rating of lifting accessories and lifting equipment
- Lift planning categories, procedures and documentation
- Pre-use checks of overhead crane and lifting accessories – Reporting of defects
- Operator controls and crane movement – Loaded & unloaded – controlling load swing
- Practical slinging techniques and movement of loads
- Suitability and selection of lifting accessories for multi-legged lifting operations
- Blind lift procedures – Use of hand signals and tag lines
- Landing of loads, sling removal, correct storage and protection of lifting accessories
- Parking and securing of overhead travelling cranes
