Course Overview

This training course is suitable for personnel who are required to plan systems of work for the use of lifting equipment. It is recommended that prior to attending this course individuals should have some experience of working with lifting equipment, especially mobile cranes.

On completion of this training course, candidates will have gained knowledge and understanding to ensure the effective planning and execution of lift plans.

  • Introduction to the organisation of lifting operations
  • Understand the purpose of legislation, regulations and approved codes of practice
  • Understanding the roles and responsibilities of personnel involved in the lifting operations
  • Introduction to different types of lifting equipment applicable to the training course
  • Principles of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems relevant to the safe operation
  • Pre-operational checks and operator level maintenance – fault reporting procedures
  • Employing organisation – Contract options
  • Understanding the types of lifting equipment & accessories in common use
  • Lifting Equipment & Accessories – checking certification & documentation
  • The selection and correct use of appropriate lifting accessories, including methods of slinging, the methods of rating for multi-legged slings
  • Competence and training of personnel involved with lifting operations
  • Understanding the format of Risk Assessments, Method statements and Lift Plans
  • Factors effecting crane siting – crane specification, including the assessment of ground conditions, and the calculation of the distribution of the total load
  • Assessing the lifting operation to provide lift planning, method statements and drawings.
  • Weather forecasts, measurement of wind speed and determining limiting wind speeds for erection of the crane and lifting operations.
  • Down-rating of lifting capacity for multiple lifting or lifting loads with large sail areas
  • Importance of communicating and implementing the prescribed lift plan
  • Hazards & risks effecting the progress of lifting operations – environmental considerations
  • Ensuring instruction and supervision as necessary for the task to be undertaken safely
  • Signalling methods, including the recognised code of hand signals
  • Briefing of lifting team members in the details of the lift plan
  • Review of lift planning and risk assessments
